“They Won’t Magically Turn You Into A Lustful Cockmonster”

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo has spoken out in favor of a Maryland ballot initiative that would legalize gay marriage. Yahoo has published a letter that Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. wrote last week to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, urging him to “inhibit such expressions from your employee.” This is Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe’s response to Burns.

This wins the day.

A new film about David Kato and other LGBTQ activists in Uganda is premiering tonight at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It will be at the Frameline Festival in San Francisco on June 19th and the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York City on June 28th. Check out their website for other screenings and events and if it’s coming to a city near you I urge you to try and make it out. Also, here’s a New York Times article and accompanying video from the two directors, Katherine Fairfax Wright and Malika Zouhali-Worrall, from earlier this year.

Extreme Makeover: The Story Behind the Story of Lawrence v. Texas

“That’s the punch line: the case that affirmed the right of gay couples to have consensual sex in private spaces seems to have involved two men who were neither a couple nor having sex. In order to appeal to the conservative Justices on the high court, the story of a booze-soaked quarrel was repackaged as a love story. Nobody had to know that the gay-rights case of the century was actually about three or four men getting drunk in front of a television in a Harris County apartment decorated with bad James Dean erotica.”

Dahlia Lithwick, senior editor at Slate Magazine, wrote a fascinating book review and history about the true story behind the landmark case Lawrence v. Texas and how it applies to the current struggle in the courts for marriage equality.
